This loom belonged to my grandmother. Setting the warp takes two of us a full afternoon, but the rhythm of it is the most peaceful part of the week. We're starting a run of indigo-dyed cotton runners — first time we're trying that yarn weight on this frame.
We took a few photos this week to show how a babouche is actually built — from cutting the pattern to the final stitch by hand. It's six steps and about 90 minutes per pair. The smell of vegetable-tanned leather is something photos can't capture. If you're ever in Fez, come visit.
